Common Water Pump Problems and How to Fix Them

Before calling an electrician, try these troubleshooting steps.

Motor Won't Start

Check:

  1. Power supply at starter
  2. Fuse condition
  3. Overload relay (reset if tripped)
  4. Capacitor (for single-phase)

Motor Runs But No Water

Causes:

  • Air lock in pump
  • Dry sump/borewell
  • Clogged foot valve
  • Impeller damage

Solution: Prime the pump, check water source level.

Low Pressure

Causes:

  • Partially blocked pipe
  • Worn impeller
  • Air leak in suction pipe
  • Undersized pipe

Motor Overheating

Causes:

  • Overload
  • Low voltage
  • Blocked ventilation
  • Bearing wear

Noisy Operation

Causes:

  • Cavitation (low water level)
  • Loose mounting
  • Bearing wear
  • Foreign objects
